Recent Changes in Canadian Citizenship Application Process
Applying for Canadian citizenship by descent now comes with a 15-month wait time for proof of Canadian citizenship certificates as of June 2026.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reports approximately 82,000 applications in the queue, a significant increase from the previous count of 70,400 in just under a month.
IRCC’s processing time estimates are based on the existing application queue, indicating a potential for further delays as more individuals apply.
Since Canada’s citizenship laws expanded eligibility in December 2025, processing times have jumped from 9 to 15 months, and application queues have more than doubled in size.
Is it worth waiting to apply?
IRCC anticipates a 15-month processing time for applications received in June, translating to a decision around September 2027.
Given the consistent increase in wait times post the enactment of Bill C-3, delaying application submission may result in extended waiting periods due to the growing number of applicants.
Reasons for the Surge in Applications
Canada’s Citizenship Act amendment on December 15, 2025, eliminated the first-generation citizenship limit for individuals born before this date.
If you meet the criteria under the revised law, you are eligible for Canadian citizenship by descent.
