A significant bill is on the verge of approval that would provide the governor general with extensive discretionary powers concerning immigration applications, documents, and temporary residents.
If passed in its current state, Bill C-12, known as the ‘Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act,’ would empower Canada’s governor general (in consultation with the Cabinet) to halt the acceptance of immigration applications for processing and to pause or terminate the processing of existing applications.
This legislation would affect various applications and documents, including permanent resident visas, work permits, study permits, temporary resident visas, and electronic travel authorizations. Additionally, permanent residence cards would fall under its purview.
Bill C-12 also includes provisions that enable the government to modify and adjust conditions on immigration documents.
