Understanding Dual Citizenship Laws in Canada

Canada recognizes dual and multiple nationalities, allowing individuals to become Canadian citizens without giving up their existing citizenship(s). However, the ability to hold two passports is subject to the laws of both countries involved. If you are considering Canadian citizenship, your ability to retain your original citizenship(s) will depend on the laws of those jurisdictions.

Countries Allowing Dual Citizenship with Canada

1. Philippines

The Philippines permits dual citizenship with Canada for natural-born Filipino citizens only. They can retain their Philippine citizenship by taking an oath of allegiance under Republic Act 9225. Children born abroad to at least one Filipino parent are automatically dual citizens.

2. Nigeria

Nigeria allows dual citizenship with Canada for certain individuals. Those who acquired Nigerian citizenship at birth or through descent can keep their original nationality after becoming Canadian. However, individuals who gained Nigerian citizenship through naturalization must renounce their original citizenship.

Note: Dual citizens must enter and leave Nigeria with their Nigerian passport.

3. United States

US citizens can obtain Canadian citizenship without renouncing their existing citizenship. There are no conditions, making all US citizens eligible for dual citizenship.

However, entry into and exit from the US must be done on a US passport.

4. France

France has allowed dual citizenship since 1973, with no restrictions on holding multiple nationalities.

5. Pakistan

Pakistan allows dual citizenship with Canada, but specific conditions may apply.
