When it comes to obtaining permanent residence (PR) in Canada, many individuals find the Express Entry category-based selection (CBS) to be a favorable pathway. Compared to other selection methods, CBS often features lower Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off scores and work experience requirements. However, there are certain considerations, such as draw frequency and category eligibility, that can impact accessibility for some applicants.
About Category-Based Selection
Category-based selection (CBS) was introduced in May 2023 to address labor shortages in specific fields and promote francophone immigration across Canada. Individuals in eligible occupations or with proficient French-language skills may have better chances of being selected under this category compared to other draw types like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
The current Express Entry categories include Healthcare and Social Services, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), Trade, Agriculture and Agri-food, Education, Physicians with Canadian work experience, and French-language proficiency.
To qualify for PR through an Express Entry category, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria of an Express Entry program, possess a minimum of six months of qualifying work experience in an eligible occupation, or meet specific French language requirements. Additionally, applicants must adhere to all ministerial instructions for the respective round of selection.
It is important to note that the Physicians with Canadian work experience category necessitates 12 months of exclusive work experience gained within Canada.
In 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted a total of 58 draws, with 19 of them being category-based draws. These draws covered various categories and occupations, offering opportunities for eligible candidates to apply for PR.
