Moving to a new country can be challenging, especially when looking for work. When I became a permanent resident in Canada in 2022, finding a job was a daunting task. Like many newcomers, I had to navigate a new job market, adapt to a different resume style, and understand employer expectations.

Here are some strategies that helped me secure my first job in Canada:

1) Engage with Settlement Services Early

Connecting with a settlement service shortly after my arrival was immensely beneficial. These services offer support tailored to newcomers, including assistance with job searches. I was assigned a case manager who provided guidance, added me to their job bank, and offered virtual workshops on navigating the job market and preparing for interviews.

It’s important to note that eligibility for settlement services may vary, so it’s advisable to check the programs you qualify for before applying.

2) Understand Canadian Resume Standards

Prior to my move, my resume had a different format compared to Canadian standards. Canadian resumes are typically straightforward, omitting photos, excessive formatting, and personal details. They are concise, usually one to two pages long, with a clear layout and readable font.

Learning to tailor my resume to Canadian preferences was crucial in enhancing my job prospects.
