The choice of your primary National Occupational Classification (NOC) code plays a crucial role in determining your eligibility for Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry.
Not only does your primary NOC affect your eligibility for Express Entry programs, but it also influences your chances for enhanced Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams.
Incorrectly selecting your primary NOC can lead to missed opportunities, application refusals, and potential misrepresentation issues.
This article emphasizes the significance of choosing the correct primary NOC and offers guidance on accurately selecting it for your Express Entry profile.
Understanding the Importance of Your Primary NOC
Eligibility for Express Entry
When completing your Express Entry profile, you must designate your primary NOC.
Your primary NOC is the key occupation that represents your main skilled experience and forms the basis of your Express Entry application if you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
An incorrect primary NOC entry could render you ineligible for specific Express Entry programs.
For instance, for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), your primary NOC should align with your two years of work experience in specific NOC groups.
- Major Groups 72, 73, 82, 83, 92, or 93 (excluding Sub-Major Groups 726 and 932)
- Minor Group 6320
- Unit Group 62200
For example, if you are a chef (NOC 62200) but mistakenly list your primary occupation as a cook (NOC 62300), you may become ineligible for the FSTP due to the classification mismatch.
Similarly, to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), your one year of continuous work experience in your primary occupation must align with the NOC you intend to use in your Express Entry application.
For the Canadian Experience Class, you need at least one year of work experience in NOCs falling under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3, acquired while working in Canada.
Canada’s NOC system categorizes jobs into six TEER levels (0 to 5) based on Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities.
