For individuals in the technology sector looking to live and work in Canada, there are numerous opportunities available.
In recent years, Canada has implemented various work permit streams and pathways to permanent residence (PR) specifically designed to attract skilled tech workers.
With the US considering a substantial fee increase for H-1B visa petitions, Canada’s Prime Minister has expressed intentions to provide a competitive option for tech professionals affected by this change.
While the specifics of this offering are yet to be revealed, Canada already offers several avenues for tech experts to establish themselves in the country:
- Temporary Foreign Worker Program – Global Talent Stream: Allows for faster processing of Labor Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) with a turnaround time of two weeks.
- International Mobility Program – Intra Company Transfers: Permits LMIA-exempt transfers for executives, senior managers, or specialized-knowledge employees of multinational companies present in Canada, with processing times ranging from two to four months.
- International Mobility Program – Innovation Stream: Offers LMIA-exempt employer-specific work permits for candidates with job offers from Global Hypergrowth Project (GHP) employers, processed within two weeks.
- Category Based Selection Draws (Express Entry) – STEM category: Under the Provincial Nominee Program, candidates in the STEM category are targeted for permanent residence through category-based rounds, focusing on occupations in demand, with a processing time of six months.
- Provincial Nominee Program – Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program: Designed for individuals with work experience in select tech occupations, providing a pathway to permanent residence within seven months.
- Provincial Nominee Program – Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway: Available for candidates working full-time in Alberta or those with valid job offers in eligible tech occupations, with a processing time of seven months.
