Over 400 US-trained healthcare professionals have relocated to British Columbia (B.C.) in the past year, benefiting from new regulations that expedite licensing and employment processes.
B.C.’s recruitment initiative, initiated in March 2025, has resulted in more than 2,750 job applications from American healthcare workers, surpassing initial expectations.
Discover the recent changes, eligibility criteria, and steps to initiate your move.
Recent Developments for US Healthcare Workers in BC
In 2025, British Columbia simplified the recognition of US medical qualifications for doctors and nurses.
For Doctors
In July 2025, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC introduced a new pathway. US doctors with certification from the American Board of Medical Specialties can now obtain full licensure in B.C. without additional assessments or exams.
Prior to this update, the process was lengthy and involved additional requirements, even for seasoned physicians.
For Nurses
The BC College of Nurses and Midwives implemented a streamlined registration process in April 2025. US nurses can now directly apply for licensure, bypassing the previous third-party assessment.
The college evaluates their education, exam results, work history, and regulatory records through a US national database. Registration now takes days instead of the previous average of four months.
Since the new nursing pathway was introduced, applications from US-trained nurses have surged by 127%. Over 1,038 US nurses and nurse practitioners registered to work in B.C. between April 2025 and January 2026, a significant increase from the previous year.
Eligibility and Opportunities
B.C. is actively recruiting for various healthcare positions.
As of January 2026, the 400+ US professionals who accepted positions included:
- 89 doctors;
- 260 nurses;
- 42 nurse practitioners; and
- 23 allied health professionals.
These professionals are employed in medical facilities throughout the province, spanning from Vancouver to rural areas in Northern B.C.
The province is emphasizing roles in critical areas such as cancer care, emergency departments, and underserved rural communities. Health Match BC, the provincial health workforce recruitment agency, offers free assistance and guidance throughout the process.

Initiating the Move to Canada
If you are a US healthcare professional considering a move to B.C., the initial step is to register with the relevant regulatory body to ensure your qualifications are recognized before seeking employment.
Obtaining a license to practice is essential, but planning your immigration status is equally crucial.
