Proving Eligibility for Canadian Citizenship

Understanding the Physical Presence Rule
Applicants must show that they have resided in Canada for a minimum of 1,095 days, equivalent to three full years within the preceding five years before submitting their application. While the days need not be consecutive, only full days spent physically in Canada are considered.
If an individual resided in Canada before becoming a permanent resident, time spent in the country as a temporary resident or protected person may count as half a day for each day, up to a maximum of 365 days. However, time spent in correctional facilities cannot be included in the calculation.
Additional Requirements for Citizenship
Permanent Resident Status: Applicants must hold valid permanent resident status without any pending immigration violations, fraud, or removal proceedings. While a valid PR card is not mandatory, the status must be active.
Income Tax: It is essential to have filed Canadian income taxes for a minimum of three separate years within the five-year eligibility period, as per Canadian tax regulations.
Language Proficiency: Individuals aged between 18 and 54 must demonstrate proficiency in either English or French. This can be proven through language test results or completed education in one of the official languages.
Citizenship Test: Applicants in the specified age group are required to pass a comprehensive test on Canada’s history, geography, government structure, national symbols, and citizen rights and responsibilities.
Criminal Background: Individuals currently serving a sentence, on probation, or parole are ineligible to apply for citizenship. Certain criminal convictions, whether in Canada or abroad, may also impact eligibility.
Residency Declaration: Applicants must declare their intention to reside in Canada or serve abroad as a public servant or member of the Canadian Armed Forces.
