Quebec Increases Financial Requirements for International Students

Quebec Increases Financial Requirements for International Students

Starting January 1, 2026, Quebec will significantly raise the minimum amount of money international students need to demonstrate for living expenses. These new requirements affect all new CAQ and study permit applicants, as well as current students seeking renewal.

Key Changes in Financial Requirements

  • The minimum living-expense amount for a single student, regardless of age, will jump to $24,617, a substantial increase compared to the current levels.
  • For students with spouses or dependent children, the required funds escalate further.
  • These funds are distinct from tuition and travel expenses.

Quebec’s Financial Standards vs. National Requirements

Quebec’s financial criteria, established through its immigration agreement with the federal government, will now surpass the national requirements set by IRCC.

Documentation of Financial Capacity

International students must demonstrate financial capacity at various stages, including CAQ application, study permit application through IRCC, and during document renewals. Both Quebec and IRCC review the same financial resources.

Acceptable proof of financial capacity includes recent bank statements, official bank letters, scholarship confirmations, pay slips, tax assessments, and authorized fund-transfer documents for applicants from countries with currency controls.
