Quebec Family Sponsorship Program 2026: Updates and Changes

Quebec is set to re-open intake for capped family sponsorship applications on July 2, 2026.

During a two-year period, Quebec will accept a maximum of 15,700 applications for undertakings to sponsor family members for permanent residence. This includes 13,300 spots for spouses and 2,400 spots for parents or grandparents. Notably, dependent children aged 18 or older will no longer be subject to the cap.

Applications exceeding the cap will be returned without processing, with fees refunded to the applicants. The recent changes were announced by the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI), Quebec’s immigration department.

Older applications will be prioritized once the intake period commences, as stated in the official press release. It’s important to note that the cap does not apply to certain categories, such as undertakings for dependent children, orphaned minors, or children in the process of adoption.

In the context of family sponsorship, a dependent child is defined as an unmarried child under the age of 22. Spousal sponsorship, on the other hand, encompasses legally married spouses, common-law partners, or conjugal partners.

Quebec initially implemented a cap for family sponsorship undertakings in June 2024, which included dependent children aged 18 or older. The previous intake period reached its cap in July 2025 and is currently ongoing until June 25, 2026.
