Ontario’s Innovative Approach to Immigration
Ontario is on the brink of introducing fresh immigration streams under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). The province’s Immigration Minister, David Piccini, has revealed plans for a novel talent stream that will focus on acknowledging excellence in various fields such as research, culinary arts, and entrepreneurship. The recent passing of Bill 30 has empowered Ontario to develop and modify OINP streams more flexibly, signaling a positive change in the province’s immigration landscape.
Understanding the Timing
The decision to revamp the nominee program comes in the wake of the closure of the Express Entry Skilled Trades Stream on November 14, attributed to widespread eligibility and compliance issues. Notably, all applications are being returned with refunds. Additionally, the pause in draws for the Master’s Graduate, PhD Graduate, and Entrepreneur streams over the past year hints at a strategic shift in the allocation of nomination spots within Ontario’s immigration programs.
Moreover, with the federal PNP target for 2026 now increased to 91,500 admissions, Ontario is poised to capitalize on this expansion by launching new streams and redistributing nominations across its various programs.
