New Safety Net Introduced for Foreign Workers in Atlantic Canada

Immigration New Brunswick (INB) has implemented a new measure to address delays in permanent residence (PR) processing for foreign workers endorsed under the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).

Eligible AIP candidates can now receive letters of support from the province to apply for C18 closed work permits, allowing them to continue working with their current employers while awaiting PR decisions.

Recent data from IRCC indicates a significant increase in AIP processing times, from 13 to 37 months, putting many applicants at risk of losing their legal status. AIP work permits are valid for two years and are not covered by the Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP).

To qualify for this support, individuals must stay with their designated employer and inform INB of any job changes. Those requiring a support letter must complete a Post-Endorsement Request Form before submitting their application to IRCC.

The AIP remains a crucial pathway for skilled workers in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, facilitating the connection between employers and newcomers looking to establish themselves in Atlantic Canada.
