New Financial Checks for Canadian Study Permits

Canadian study permit applicants are now subject to stricter financial scrutiny, as outlined by the immigration department on July 24, 2026. The updated assessment process requires officers to thoroughly examine applicants’ funding sources to ensure financial stability throughout their study programs.

The revised instructions emphasize the importance of verifying supplementary financial and employment documents to validate the authenticity of students’ financial capabilities. Unlike the previous guidelines, the new directives eliminate the need for high-risk qualifiers, indicating a more comprehensive review approach.

Proof of funds documentation now includes six months of bank statements, with specific requirements for study permit renewals. Notable additions to the list of acceptable income sources are pension income and rental properties, while certain forms of documentation have been removed.

Unchanged Fund Requirements

Although the financial assessment process has been enhanced, the required fund amounts remain consistent. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources for a year of study, in addition to covering tuition and travel expenses. The exact amount varies based on family size, study location, and permit stream, with adjustments made annually to align with the cost of living in Canada.
