Applying for Canadian citizenship now involves a self-administered online citizenship test, according to the latest guidelines from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The new format allows up to three attempts and has a 45-minute time limit. In-person and Microsoft Teams tests are also options under specific circumstances.
Online Testing Becomes Standard
Prior to recent changes, in-person written citizenship tests were common, but the new instructions make online testing the default method. The online test comprises 20 questions, with a passing score of 15, drawn from a pool of 300-400 questions. If issues arise with test results, applicants may be asked to retake the test or attend an interview.
Once the knowledge assessment is passed, applicants meet the knowledge requirement for citizenship. The test is mandatory for permanent residents aged 18-54 seeking naturalization as Canadian citizens.
