Canada’s Family Sponsorship Landscape in 2026
Canada has recently implemented changes affecting permanent residence sponsorship for parents and grandparents. As of January 1, new applications under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) are no longer being accepted, with only 2025 submissions currently under review.
Exploring Available Options
The primary pathway now is the Super Visa, offering extended stays for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. While it does not lead to permanent residence, it allows for up to five years per entry and a visa validity of up to 10 years. Approval hinges on the host meeting income requirements and the applicant having Canadian medical insurance with sufficient coverage.
Alternatively, standard visitor visas or eTAs are accessible for shorter stays, though they lack the predictability of the Super Visa and are not intended for prolonged visits.
Key Considerations for Families
In the current landscape, the focus is on temporary status rather than permanent sponsorship for parents and grandparents. The Super Visa offers stability for extended stays, while visitor visas and eTAs are more suitable for short visits while awaiting potential policy adjustments.
