Pursuing a one-year diploma, whether in Canada or abroad, can significantly enhance your chances of receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) through the Express Entry system. When coupled with language proficiency and/or Canadian work experience, a one-year diploma can make you a more competitive candidate by boosting your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
Foreign credentials need to be supported by an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to validate the Canadian equivalence of your international qualification.
This article delves into the additional points a single candidate can earn by obtaining a one-year diploma across different sections of the CRS (with an illustrative example):
- Core / Human Capital Factors;
- Skill Transferability Factors; and
- Additional Factors.

Core / Human Capital
Within the Core / Human Capital Factors, foreign nationals receive CRS points based on their educational qualifications. Adding a one-year diploma to your Express Entry profile can elevate your CRS score by a minimum of 60 points if you don’t hold any other educational credential.
If you already possess an educational qualification, your CRS score will increase as follows:
- High school diploma + one-year diploma: 30 to 90 points = increase of 60 points.
- Bachelor’s degree or three-year credential + one-year diploma: 120 to 128 points = increase of 8 points.
Foreign nationals can earn 128 CRS points for having two or more credentials, with at least one being from a program lasting a minimum of three years.
Skill Transferability Factors
In the Skill Transferability section of the CRS, foreign nationals receive points based on their education and:
- Language proficiency; and/or
- Canadian work experience.
In this section, individuals can accumulate up to 50 points with a one-year diploma or 100 points (the maximum) by adding a one-year diploma to a three-year credential—depending on their language proficiency and Canadian work experience.
Education + Language
In this category, the CRS assigns either 13 or 25 points to candidates with just a one-year diploma, depending on their language proficiency.
