Manitoba Workers to Receive Work Permit Extensions

About 2,700 workers in Manitoba will have the opportunity to obtain work permit extensions, as announced by two Winnipeg members of Parliament (MPs).

The extensions are being offered to workers in Manitoba who are seeking permanent residence through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP), according to Kevin Lamoureux, the federal MP for Winnipeg North.

Lamoureux revealed the extensions in a social media post on July 6, 2026.

The extensions will be valid until the end of 2027, allowing workers to continue working while their provincial applications are processed, according to Terry Duguid, federal MP for Winnipeg South.

The government has not yet provided details on the application process for these extensions, the eligibility criteria, or the effective date.

The announced measure, named the “Manitoba Workforce Transition Bridge” (MWTB), is a follow-up to a temporary public policy from 2024 that enabled the issuance of open work permits to provincial nominee candidates.

Over 1,600 workers who received work permits under the 2024 policy have already become permanent residents, while 2,700 others are awaiting provincial nominations, with the province facing challenges in meeting the nomination deadline.

The 2024 policy, which expired without renewal, may have been quietly extended until the end of 2025, according to an update in January 2025.
