IRCC Removes Requirement for Grandparents’ Marriage Details from Canadian Citizenship Application

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has eliminated the need for applicants to disclose the marriage details of their grandparents from CIT-0001, the application form for proof of Canadian citizenship.

IRCC introduced a specific field for these marriage details on August 25, coinciding with an update that broadened the definition of evidence of a Canadian parent’s physical presence in Canada.

Previously, IRCC had requested the marriage details of an applicant’s grandparents since January but only officially included a dedicated section in the form on the 25th. Shortly after this update, IRCC removed both the request for details and the corresponding form field within 48 hours.

In the latest update, IRCC has also removed the reference to this requirement from the instructions on page 13 of the form, where it had been listed since January.

As a result of these changes, the request for grandparents’ marriage details has been completely eliminated from the form, instructions, document checklist, and guide. Despite these modifications, officers may still inquire about a grandparent’s marriage during application processing, as this information can be crucial for certain claims related to citizenship inheritance.

For instance, in cases where an individual’s Canadian lineage is traced through a female ancestor, such as a grandmother, a marriage certificate can serve as vital documentation to explain name changes from a maiden name to a married surname.

Identifying the Correct Version

There are two versions of the CIT-0001 form with the same footer: CIT 0001 (08-2026) E. IRCC has updated the contents while retaining the revision code.

If you downloaded the form on August 25 or 26, you possess the earlier version that includes the marriage fields.

Verification Process

Refer to Section 9 on page 5. Under Parent A and Parent B of Parent 1, check for a field labeled date and place of marriage. If these sections are present as depicted in the images below, you have the earlier edition.
