Improvement in Processing Times for In-Canada Work Permit Applications

The processing time for in-Canada work permit applications has significantly decreased, offering a more efficient experience for foreign nationals in Canada.

As of June 10, 2026, individuals submitting new work permit applications or seeking extensions can anticipate a processing time of 186 days, down from 212 days in May 2026, according to recent data released by Canada’s immigration department.

The processing time reported in June 2026 marks the shortest duration recorded this year based on available statistics.

The graph below illustrates the trend in wait times for in-Canada work permit extensions from January to June 2026:

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada utilizes two types of processing estimates: forward-looking and historical. The wait time for initial work permits and extensions is determined based on historical estimates, reflecting the time taken for the department to finalize 80% of applications of a specific type in the past.

Although the expected processing times are still above the department’s service standard goal of processing 80% of in-Canada work permit applications within four months, foreign nationals extending their work permits before expiry can benefit from maintained status. This status allows them to continue working under the conditions of their expired permit while their application is under review, as long as they remain in Canada.

In response to extended processing times faced by applicants, Canada extended the validity period of work permit support letters from six months to one year in April 2026. These support letters serve as documentation for foreign nationals to prove their maintained status to employers and government agencies.
