When renewing your passport online, there is a daily cap on applications that you need to be aware of. You can create an online account at any time, but if the cap has been reached, you won’t be able to start your renewal process.
To increase your chances of applying online successfully, it is recommended to initiate your application right after 7 am or 7 pm Eastern time, as the cap resets daily at these times. Note that only online applications are affected by this cap.
Alternatively, Canadian citizens can renew their passports through mail or in-person at passport offices and Service Canada centers. The current service standards for passport applications are as follows:
| Application type | Online | In-person | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service standard | 20 business days | 10 or 20 business days (depending on location) | 20 business days |
It’s important to note that the service standards mentioned above do not include mailing time. Additionally, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) alerts that applications may face delays due to Canada Post labor disruptions.
For urgent passport renewals due to imminent travel plans, applicants can request expedited processing in person at passport centers. Proof of urgent travel is required for expedited services.
