How to Avoid Post-Graduation Work Permit Refusals: New Instructions from IRCC

In recent times, some international student graduates have faced rejections on their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applications due to missing language tests and proof of field of study requirements.

The absence of these documents is due to Canada’s immigration department’s acknowledgment of ‘system limitations,’ as the application portal does not have a designated section for these documents.

This oversight has led some applicants to believe that these documents are unnecessary, resulting in their exclusion from the application.

Consequently, applicants risk having their applications rejected, which could jeopardize their chances of working in Canada and qualifying for permanent residence pathways designed for international graduates.

Responding to this issue, on December 10, IRCC introduced a new section on its website outlining the process for applying for a PGWP.

This new section details the procedure for submitting language test results and field of study documentation with the application.

This article will discuss:

  • IRCC’s updated method for submitting language skills proof and field of study documents;
  • Steps to take if you have already submitted your PGWP application without these documents; and
  • Clarification on who needs to provide language results and field of study proof.

How to Include Language Test Results and Field of Study Proof in Your PGWP Application

The current IRCC system does not display these requirements on the online document checklist where documents are uploaded.

In essence, there is no specific section prompting you to upload language test results or evidence of an eligible field of study.

However, IRCC’s updated guidelines specify that these documents should be uploaded under the ‘Client Information’ section of your online account.

Key points to note:

  • Only one file can be saved in the ‘Client Information’ section.
  • If multiple files are uploaded, only the most recent one will be retained in the application.
  • If you need to submit multiple documents (e.g., a language test report and a school confirmation letter), combine them into a single file (e.g., a merged PDF) before uploading to the ‘Client Information’ section.

It may be necessary to compress your file to meet IRCC’s system specifications. Additional guidance is available on the department’s webpage.
