Canada has introduced a new program to assist francophone international students and graduates in their journey towards permanent residence (PR).
This initiative provides students at a public French-language institution, Université de Hearst, with tailored support as they navigate their immigration options for the long term.
The project at Université de Hearst offers a voluntary program integrated into the university curriculum. It includes activities designed to provide international students and graduates with comprehensive information on francophone immigration pathways and the process of obtaining PR.
This program encompasses:
- Informational sessions;
- Practical assistance for transitioning into the job market;
- Personalized guidance tailored to individual objectives; and
- Integration opportunities such as internships, mentoring, and volunteering.
Announced on March 20th by Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab in Sudbury, Ontario, this project is part of the Francophone Immigration Support Program, which includes two other initiatives receiving federal funding:
Francophone Global Talent Mapping: a project aimed at identifying international bilingual information and communications technology talent and developing strategies to attract these professionals to Canada.
Informing and preparing future francophone Immigrants: A campaign to educate French-speaking individuals about immigration opportunities in Francophone communities across Canada (excluding Quebec) through video content and an immersive miniseries showcasing the lives of immigrants.
Furthermore, Diab highlighted additional support for Université de l’Ontario français, which will receive funding to create a unique micro-certificate program in francophone immigration management.
The Significance of Francophone Immigration in Canada
This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to welcome and integrate more French-speaking newcomers into the country.
Université de Hearst is involved in the Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot, offering eligible international students settlement services during their studies and PR eligibility upon completion.
In 2025, Canada launched a new immigration pathway for francophone international students, emphasizing the country’s commitment to supporting French-speaking individuals in their immigration journey.
