Canadian Universities Shine in Global Rankings by Subject

Recently, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its latest university rankings by subject, revealing that Canadian universities continue to excel on the global stage. In the top 30 globally, both the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia have secured their positions across all five subject areas.

Notably, six Canadian universities have made it into the top 100 for various subjects this year, maintaining the country’s strong presence in international education.

The 16th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject is the most comprehensive yet, encompassing over 1,900 institutions worldwide. The rankings cover five broad subject areas, including Life Sciences and Medicine, Engineering and Technology, Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Social Sciences and Management.

These rankings are invaluable for prospective students looking for universities that excel in their chosen fields and align with their career aspirations.

Performance of Canadian Universities in 2026

The University of Toronto continues to lead as Canada’s top-ranking university across various subjects, with rankings ranging from 12th to 17th globally this year. The University of British Columbia has shown improvement in two subject areas, namely Engineering and Technology, and Social Sciences and Management.

Furthermore, the University of Waterloo has enhanced its rankings in two subjects, climbing seven and five positions, respectively. The University of Alberta has also made significant progress, entering the top 100 for two subject areas, with a notable ranking of 98th in Natural Sciences.

McMaster University maintains its position in the top 100 for Life Sciences and Medicine, advancing from 59th place to 56th this year.

Canada’s leading institutions by subject are spread across Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec, showcasing the diverse educational landscape of the country.
