The latest global index reveals that the Canadian passport maintains its lead over the U.S. passport in terms of global mobility.

As of the most recent update, the Canadian passport holds the seventh position in the Henley Passport Index, while the U.S. passport is ranked 10th.

Passport Rankings and Trends

Since January 2026, Canada has steadily climbed from eighth to seventh place, while the U.S. has remained at the 10th spot.

Canada’s passport has consistently been in the top 10 since 2006, reaching its peak at second place in 2014 before stabilizing in the sixth to ninth range due to increased competition.

In contrast, the U.S. has experienced a notable decline, dropping from first place in 2006 to 12th in October 2025, marking its first time outside the top 10 in the index’s history. However, it managed to climb back to the 10th spot by January 2026.

Visa-Free Travel and Destinations

The ranking is determined by the number of destinations passport holders can visit without requiring a visa. Currently, the Canadian passport allows visa-free travel to 183 destinations, while the U.S. passport grants access to 180 destinations.

Notably, Canadians can now enter China without a visa since February 2026, for stays of up to 30 days, while U.S. citizens still require a visa for China.

Global Passport Rankings

The latest ranking includes 38 countries with the most powerful passports, with a significant presence from Europe (29 countries). The remaining countries are distributed across Asia (5), North America (2), and Oceania (2).
