Canada’s Special Immigration Measures for Iranian Nationals: Work Permit Extensions

Canada has implemented updated immigration measures specifically for Iranian nationals residing in the country. The new policy, effective from March 1, 2026, until March 31, 2027, allows eligible individuals to apply for a work permit extension if they currently hold a valid work permit and continue to stay in Canada during the application process. To qualify, applicants must possess a work permit issued on or before February 28, 2025, hold a valid Iranian passport, meet standard admissibility criteria, and submit their applications before the deadline.

This extension opportunity is a one-time provision, and those who have already benefited from a work permit under these measures are ineligible for another extension. The revised policy supersedes the previous temporary public policy for Iranian nationals, which expired on February 28, 2026, and now focuses solely on extending work permits for Iranian employees already present in Canada.

Unlike the prior program, the current policy no longer allows Iranian nationals to apply for open work permits or study permits within Canada. Visitors and students seeking work or study permits must now follow the standard immigration procedures for their applications.

Under the new guidelines, eligibility for the work permit extension is contingent on holding a work permit issued on or before February 28, 2025, whereas the previous policy required individuals to have arrived in Canada by that date to qualify.

All applications for the work permit extension must be submitted before the deadline of March 31, 2027.
