Canada’s Permanent Resident Admissions in 2026: A Mid-Year Review

Canada’s permanent resident admissions for the first half of 2026 have reached 41% of the government’s annual target, according to recent data released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). From January to June 2026, 155,800 new permanent residents were admitted, which falls short by 34,200 compared to the expected pace towards the annual target of 380,000.

To achieve the midpoint of the annual target, Canada would need to admit a total of 224,200 permanent residents in the second half of 2026.

Economic

By June 30, IRCC had admitted 89,200 new permanent residents under the economic category, which is below the 2026 target of 239,800. The economic category includes programs like Express Entry, federal business programs, Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), and federal economic pilots.

Family

IRCC aims to admit 84,000 permanent residents under the family class in 2026. As of mid-year, 45,100 new permanent residents have been welcomed in this category, exceeding the pace needed to reach the annual target.
