Canada is actively seeking to attract skilled tech professionals affected by the recent H-1B visa fee increase in the United States. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the country’s commitment to welcoming individuals with valuable skills and entrepreneurial spirit during a global summit in the UK.
With the US imposing a significant fee on new H-1B visas, Canada sees an opportunity to position itself as an attractive destination for tech talent. Carney highlighted the importance of leveraging this situation to benefit Canada’s workforce and economy.
Canada’s Strategy to Attract Tech Talent
One of the key pathways for foreign nationals to establish themselves in Canada is through obtaining a work permit. The country offers various programs, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and the International Mobility Program (IMP), to facilitate the hiring of skilled professionals.
The TFWP, which includes the Global Talent Stream, enables employers to expedite the recruitment of foreign tech experts. This stream aims to streamline the work permit application process for these individuals, ensuring a swift and efficient hiring procedure.
On the other hand, the International Mobility Program provides LMIA-exempt work permits, offering flexibility for both employers and foreign workers. By introducing initiatives like the Innovation Stream work permit, Canada continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering innovation and attracting top talent from around the world.
