Canada has unveiled an ambitious initiative to attract over 1,000 top-tier researchers from around the world. The government is committing up to 1.7 billion dollars over the next ten years to support universities in recruiting international experts in key areas such as AI, biotechnology, clean technology, climate research, food and water security, Arctic studies, and advanced manufacturing.
The strategy encompasses the introduction of new funding schemes for universities to facilitate the hiring of seasoned researchers, early-career scholars, and international PhD students and postdocs. Successful candidates will enter Canada through standard study or work permit channels. Many academic appointments are eligible for LMIA-exempt work permits, with spouses often qualifying for open work permits under the country’s family-OWP regulations.
Moreover, a dedicated 400 million dollar fund has been established to assist universities in procuring laboratory equipment and other essential research infrastructure to support the influx of fresh talent.
