Canada Introduces Online SIN Program for Newcomers

The Canadian government is set to launch a new program called SIN@Entry in the fall of 2027. This initiative will allow newcomers, including foreign workers, international students, and new permanent residents, to obtain their Social Insurance Number (SIN) online through their immigration account before arriving in Canada.

This streamlined process will enable newcomers to start working and access government benefits more quickly upon their arrival in the country.

While newcomers currently have the option to apply for SINs online, the existing process requires them to be in Canada and can take up to five business days to complete.

A SIN is a crucial nine-digit number required for various functions in Canada, such as working legally, filing taxes, and accessing government benefits and programs.

How will newcomers receive their SIN under the program?

The Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) report outlines that newcomers will be able to request their SIN directly through their Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) account. Subsequently, they will receive their SIN digitally via their My Service Canada Account, eliminating the need for in-person visits or waiting for mail correspondence.

The SIN@Entry program aims to simplify the process, reduce administrative burdens, and expedite access to employment opportunities and benefits for newcomers.

Who is eligible for a SIN in Canada?

Individuals eligible for a SIN in Canada include Canadian citizens, permanent residents, temporary residents with work permits, international students with off-campus work permits, and individuals authorized to work under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

It is important to update your SIN record with Service Canada if there are changes to your immigration status, such as work permit expiration.
