Canada Extends Work Permits for Ukrainian Nationals: What You Need to Know

Canada has announced an extension for certain Ukrainian nationals and their family members to prolong their open work permits until March 31, 2027. This extension applies to individuals who entered Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the work permit extension, individuals must have arrived in Canada either on or before March 31, 2024, or between April 1 and December 31, 2024. Applicants are required to maintain valid temporary resident status both at the time of application and during the decision-making process.

Benefits of the Extension

  • One-time extension of work permit
  • Validity for up to 3 years

This extension enables eligible Ukrainians already in Canada to continue their employment legally without the immediate need to transition to another immigration program. Applications for the extension must be submitted through IRCC based on the relevant eligibility criteria.

Background Information

The Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) was established in 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, offering temporary protection to Ukrainian nationals in Canada. Approximately 300,000 Ukrainians and their family members have entered Canada under this program.
