Canada’s immigration department has announced an extension of measures to provide work permit extensions to eligible foreign nationals who have left Palestine, ensuring they can continue working in Canada.

Recently, on August 24, 2026, the department introduced a new temporary public policy that specifically benefits foreign nationals in Canada holding work permits issued under previous policies. To qualify for an extension under this new policy, the foreign national must have left Palestine on or after October 7, 2023, and hold valid temporary resident status. Additionally, they must be either a national of Palestine or a family member of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who left Palestine after the specified date.

Applicants who qualify as nationals of Palestine must possess a passport or travel document issued by the Palestinian Authority. The new policy, titled ‘Temporary public policy to facilitate extensions of open work permits for foreign nationals in Canada who were facilitated under previous public policies for foreign nationals of Palestine,’ is effective for applications submitted on or after August 1, 2026. It applies to work permits issued under several earlier policies dating back to 2023 and 2024.

This new policy is valid until December 30, 2027, with the possibility of being revoked at any time without prior notice.
