Alberta’s Immigration Program Expansion for 2025

Alberta is set to welcome more newcomers in 2025 following Ottawa’s approval of an increased share of provincial nominations. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has been allocated 6,403 nomination spots, marking a significant rise from its previous limit of 4,875. Although this figure falls short of Alberta’s 2024 allocation of 9,750 spots, the boost provides the province with an opportunity to recover from previous federal reductions.

Officials at the provincial level emphasize that the additional spaces will be utilized to address shortages in key occupations, particularly in healthcare, skilled trades, and technology. These sectors have been identified as crucial for Alberta’s economic growth, prompting the need for enhanced immigration capacity.

Provincial Advocacy and Federal Response

Following persistent advocacy efforts by various provinces and territories, Ottawa has responded by increasing allocation quotas. Alberta, alongside New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories, have all secured additional nomination spots. This move comes in light of concerns raised by regional stakeholders regarding the negative impact of federal immigration cuts on local development.

Observers highlight that this adjustment reflects the federal government’s attempt to strike a balance between addressing housing challenges at a national level and meeting the pressing labour needs of individual provinces.
