Accelerated Canadian Citizenship Processing: How to Expedite Your Application

Applying for Canadian citizenship as a permanent resident typically involves a waiting period of approximately 13 months for a decision. However, in certain scenarios, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) may prioritize an application beyond the usual timeframe.

Urgent processing is designated for what IRCC deems as “exceptional cases.” While there is no specific definition, the department cites instances such as needing citizenship for job retention or acquisition, facing a critical family emergency necessitating immediate travel, or receiving a favorable federal court ruling linked to a prior citizenship case. Other situations may also be evaluated if they meet the urgency criteria.

It’s important to note that requesting urgent processing does not automatically ensure approval. Even if IRCC acknowledges a case as exceptional, there is no guarantee that the application will be concluded by a specified deadline. If the request fails to meet the criteria, the file will proceed under standard processing timelines.

Prospective applicants who have not yet submitted their citizenship application must do so via mail and clearly indicate on the envelope that they are seeking urgent processing. A written explanation along with supporting documentation must be provided to substantiate the request.

For individuals who have already applied, expediting the processing can be pursued by submitting a request through IRCC’s online form. The explanation should clearly delineate the urgency of the case and include evidence to bolster the claim. It’s important to adhere to file size and format restrictions when uploading documents.

Urgent citizenship processing is discretionary and is only granted in specific circumstances where compelling evidence justifies the need for an expedited review.
