Optimizing Citizenship by Descent Application Process for Applicants Outside Canada and the US

Applicants seeking citizenship by descent who reside outside Canada and the United States can expedite their application process significantly by appointing a representative in Canada to submit their proof of citizenship application.

A representative is an individual authorized to act on behalf of applicants with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Representatives can be either paid or unpaid, and a friend or relative in Canada can fulfill this role without charge. More information on both options is provided below.

IRCC advises applicants residing abroad to anticipate an additional processing time of three to four months beyond the standard processing duration. This additional time accounts for mailing processes and is in addition to the standard waiting period for a citizenship certificate, the official document confirming Canadian citizenship.

Currently, the waiting period stands at close to three years.

When applying from abroad, most individuals claiming citizenship by descent must submit a paper application as IRCC’s online application is limited to specific groups, such as individuals with a Canadian parent born in Canada after February 15, 1977.

If residing in Canada or the US, applicants typically mail their paper applications to IRCC’s Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

For applicants residing elsewhere, IRCC instructs them to mail their applications to the Canadian embassy, high commission, or consulate serving their region, from where the documents are forwarded to IRCC in Canada.

It is important to note that the processing of your application commences on the day IRCC receives your complete application in Canada, and the additional time spent in transit does not contribute to the processing duration.
