Recent data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveals a significant decrease in the finalization of proof of citizenship applications. In July, only 2,420 certificates were approved, continuing a declining trend in processing rates.

Between January and May of 2026, a total of 28,940 citizenship certificates were issued, with an average of 5,788 certificates processed monthly during that period.

This decline is evident as the number of finalized applications has dropped below the previous monthly average for the second consecutive month.

In June, IRCC finalized 3,040 applications, falling short of the average pace observed earlier in the year.

Proof of citizenship applications are essential for Canadian citizens seeking their first citizenship certificate or replacing a previously issued one.

Insights from the Latest Data

IRCC’s recent update indicates that 34,400 citizenship certificates were finalized between January and July 2026. This figure represents a slight increase from the previous total of 31,980 by the end of June. However, the processing rate remains relatively low, with only 2,420 certificates processed by the end of July.

Furthermore, the backlog of pending applications has grown significantly, reaching 121,800 by the end of July. IRCC’s processing times tool now shows approximately 136,000 individuals in the queue, with an estimated wait time of 33 months for new proof of citizenship applications.

Individuals can expedite their application process by demonstrating an urgent need, such as for employment, travel, access to benefits, or in case of a medical or family emergency.
