Changes in Health Insurance Costs for International Students in Ontario Universities

Starting September 1, 2026, international students at major Ontario universities will see an increase in compulsory health insurance fees. The annual premiums for the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) have gone up from $792 to $948 for individuals and from $2,376 to $2,844 for a family of three. This change affects students enrolled at 22 publicly funded Ontario universities, including well-known institutions like University of Toronto, McMaster University, and Queen’s University.

About UHIP

Most international students at these universities are required to purchase UHIP coverage throughout their academic tenure. The insurance fees are automatically added to students’ accounts each term, alongside tuition fees, unless they qualify for one of four exemptions: having coverage under OHIP, another approved plan, diplomatic status, or a government-sponsored plan. It’s important to note that foreign nationals in Ontario cannot access OHIP based on their student status.
