Authorities have inaugurated a new border crossing at a key point along the Canada-U.S. border.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge has commenced operations on July 27, 2026, as announced by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority on July 24.

Spanning the Detroit River, this bridge serves as the third connection between Ontario and Michigan, supplementing the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor–Detroit Tunnel, which are among the busiest border crossings in North America.

Constructed to alleviate congestion in the Windsor–Detroit corridor, the Gordie Howe International Bridge aims to reduce wait times, especially during peak periods when crossing the Ambassador Bridge can entail significant delays.

The new crossing will be accessible around the clock, seven days a week, catering to various vehicles including automobiles, motorcycles, RVs, and semi-trucks.

Facilities at the port of entry feature expedited lanes for Trusted Travellers Program (NEXUS) members and approved commercial transporters (FAST).

Starting August 5, pedestrians and cyclists will have access to a dedicated path on the bridge, separate from vehicular traffic, making it the first non-motorized crossing between Windsor and Detroit.

Tolls for standard passenger vehicles will be 8 CAD (5.75 USD), while larger commercial trucks and vehicles will pay 12 CAD (8.75 USD). The multi-use path will be toll-free.

As per a press release from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) on July 24, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is now recognized as Canada’s largest and most advanced land border crossing.

The inauguration of this bridge, aimed at enhancing cross-border travel efficiency, signifies the culmination of over two decades of collaborative efforts between Canadian and U.S. authorities.

Owned jointly by the Canadian federal government and the State of Michigan, the bridge faced delays in its planned opening due to toll revenue disputes, with the ceremonial launch taking place on July 24 in the absence of U.S. officials.

Dedicated to Gordie Howe, a prominent Canadian hockey figure associated with the Detroit Red Wings, the bridge stands as a testament to his legacy.

Travellers can access real-time border wait times on the CBSA’s official port of entry webpage for the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Individuals entering Canada through this crossing must possess the necessary travel documentation as per Canadian immigration requirements.

With the addition of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, Canada now boasts a total of 118 land border ports of entry.
