Starting April 1, 2026, Canadian citizens will see a significant change in passport processing times. Applications will now be processed within 30 business days, or applicants will receive their passport for free.
Individuals whose applications exceed the 30-day processing period will automatically receive full refunds of their passport fees.
This new policy aims to enhance accountability and efficiency in passport services, offering Canadians a more straightforward and predictable experience.
The Government of Canada initially announced this initiative in March 2025, with an intended implementation date later that year, which was unfortunately delayed.
The official implementation date of April 1 was confirmed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on March 3, 2026, through an online announcement.
This policy applies to all passport applications, regardless of the submission method (online, in person, or by mail), and covers various application types, including adult five-year passports, adult 10-year passports, child regular passports, and adult five-year passports from abroad.
