Important Update for Iranian Nationals in Canada
The temporary public policy for Iranian nationals in Canada has expired, affecting new applications under this special measure.
Prior to its expiration, Iranians who arrived in Canada on or before February 28, 2025, were eligible to apply for open work permits from within the country. Additionally, eligible applicants received priority processing and were allowed to apply for study permits without having to leave Canada.
As of March 1, 2026, this measure is no longer in effect.
This policy was initially implemented in 2023 in response to civil unrest in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini. A revised version of the policy was introduced on March 1, 2025, which did not include exemptions from certain government fees present in the earlier version.
Temporary public policies are commonly utilized in Canada’s immigration system to address various humanitarian situations. Similar measures have been employed to assist individuals affected by conflicts in Ukraine, Haiti, Gaza, and Sudan.
Following the expiration of this policy, Iranian nationals will need to utilize standard immigration and temporary residence pathways unless a new public measure is introduced.
