New individuals seeking employment opportunities in Ontario may now have a smoother path to securing interviews and jobs that align with their expertise and background.
Commencing January 1, 2026, significant changes to Ontario’s Employment Standards Act (ESA) will come into effect, particularly impacting publicly advertised job postings.
One of the key changes includes the prohibition of requesting Canadian work experience in job listings or related application materials. This adjustment addresses a longstanding issue that has hindered skilled newcomers from accessing job opportunities in the province.
Previously, employers could demand ‘Canadian work experience’ as a prerequisite, even if international experience was equally relevant. Critics have highlighted that this requirement puts newcomers at a disadvantage, as it overlooks their qualifications and expertise, solely based on the lack of local experience.
