Canada Reverses Provincial Nominee Program Cuts: What You Need to Know

The recent announcement by Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab signals a reversal of part of last year’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) cuts, with provinces being granted additional nomination slots for 2025.

Nova Scotia, among others, will see a significant increase in its quota after experiencing a reduction earlier this year. The province’s nominations have been raised from 1,785 to approximately 3,700, up from the previous 3,570. Similarly, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia will also benefit from increased allocations.

This adjustment comes in response to prolonged criticism from provinces that heavily rely on PNPs to address crucial labor shortages. Minister Diab emphasized that this change aims to rectify any deviations from national immigration targets while considering the need to balance housing and infrastructure demands.

The forthcoming 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan is anticipated to shed light on whether these additional slots represent a permanent policy adjustment or a temporary solution.
