Canada has introduced AI screening for individuals entering the country at select land ports of entry (POEs). The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has implemented the Travel Compliance Indicator (TCI) tool to assist officers in screening travelers. The TCI assigns a ‘compliance score’ to individuals entering Canada, aiding in determining if further examination is necessary. The tool is currently in use at six land POEs, with plans for expansion to all land, air, and sea POEs by late 2027. The CBSA aims to enhance efficiency and security screening at all POEs through the TCI.
Impact on Travelers Entering Canada
The CBSA aims to enhance the traveler experience by reducing processing times and minimizing unnecessary security referrals. The TCI utilizes predictive analytics to identify compliant travelers based on historical data, reducing delays and improving efficiency at POEs. While the system is designed to aid decision-making, final determinations are made by CBSA officers to ensure accuracy and operational effectiveness.
Screening Process
The TCI utilizes artificial intelligence and predictive modeling to generate compliance scores for travelers. By analyzing data from various databases in real-time, the system evaluates travel history, means of transport, identification, and other live determinants to assess entry compliance. The tool aims to streamline the screening process and enhance security measures at Canada’s ports of entry.
