Canada’s Rising Asylum Numbers: A Closer Look
Canada is currently experiencing a surge in asylum seekers, with a record number of 57,440 individuals filing refugee claims in the first half of 2025. This influx has significantly increased the backlog of cases at the Immigration and Refugee Board, reaching nearly 292,000.
The majority of claimants have arrived in provinces such as Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. The top 10 countries of origin for asylum seekers this year are India, Nigeria, Iran, Mexico, Bangladesh, Haiti, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Colombia. These trends highlight the global challenges of political unrest, violence, climate crises, and economic instability.
While many claims are deemed legitimate, there are concerns raised by critics regarding individuals exploiting the asylum system for economic reasons. This has sparked debates on border control, fairness in the asylum process, and the country’s capacity for integration.
Looking towards the future, the government in Ottawa anticipates approximately 58,000 new asylum claims in the latter half of 2025, with a projected decrease in numbers in the subsequent years.
