Support for Ukrainian Nationals in Canada
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has implemented a temporary measure to assist Ukrainian nationals and their families in maintaining legal status in Canada while their permanent residence applications are processed.
This measure is specifically designed for applicants under the PR public policy for Ukrainians with family ties in Canada. It applies to individuals who currently hold valid temporary status, those who have recently lost it, or those seeking restoration. Eligible applications must be submitted from within Canada by March 31, 2026.
Qualified applicants are exempt from penalties related to overstaying or engaging in unauthorized work or study. The temporary measure will be in effect until March 31, 2027, with standard application fees applicable. Applications are accepted even without a PR acknowledgement of receipt.
Background and Timeline
The PR pathway was active from October 2023 to October 2024, following emergency measures implemented after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. One of these measures was the Canada Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel.
Considering the current political and humanitarian circumstances in Iran, it is conceivable that similar relief measures may be extended to Iranian nationals. However, as of now, there is no indication that such policies are under consideration.
