Canada’s federal government has revealed plans to enhance the collection of biometrics in Labrador, with operations set to commence in January 2027.

Upon the launch of the new facility, individuals seeking immigration services in Labrador will have the convenience of having their biometrics collected in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Currently, many individuals residing in Labrador have to travel to Newfoundland to undergo biometric collection in St. John’s, which is a considerable journey of 900km by air or 1600km by car and ferry from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The opening of the biometrics site was announced by Immigration Minister Lena Diab during a press conference in St. John’s on the morning of September 29, 2026.

Biometrics for immigration applications typically involve capturing an individual’s photograph and fingerprints.

These biometrics requirements are relevant for applications related to temporary residence, permanent residence (PR), and PR card renewals for individuals who were exempt from biometrics during their initial PR application.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay, the most populous center in Labrador, was home to 8,040 residents according to the 2021 Census.
